LETTERS FROM USERS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following are just a few of the 70 odd letters we received
after releasing our Premiere Issue of MEGADISC. We thank all those
who wrote, and must say we were greatly heartened by the positive
response...
From an Architect
-----------------
The Amiga is one of a number of micros which we use in our work
here. We do a lot of our architectural presentations on videotape. We
have our own studio equipment - various VTR's, colour cameras, editors,
etc., and the Amiga enables us to transfer reasonable images (graphs
and other computer-generated visuals) directly to videotape. This is
one of its most useful (and unique) capabilities as far as we are
concerned.
Our Amiga set-up includes an external drive, a Sidecar with a
partitioned 20 MB hard disk, and 2 MB additional RAM, plus three
switchable printers, an NEC P6, an EPSON EX-800 (colour) and a CGP220
colour inkjet printer. We use Deluxe Paint II to create some imaging,
and DIGIVIEW to digitize photographs and drawings for some special
presentation effects.
For some years we have been doing our own programming (mainly in
MicroSoft Basic or similar, compiled where appropriate), which is
exclusive to our own practice in architecture. This is mainly
concentrated in the areas of Feasibility presentation work, and
Feasibility economic analysis, for major projects such as hotels,
large office buildings, etc.
While we have always monitored progress in available CAD systems,
we see no advantage to date in using CAD in our particular practice.
Quite frankly, even the best CAD systems are too primitive and too
cumbersome for the type of architectural work we do - mainly few, but
large, one-off "unique" projects, with little or no repetition of
previously used details.
I have been programming for about 10 years, mainly in
architectural and related fields, but also for fun and relaxation I
have dabbled in games, astronomy and other equally unrelated pursuits!
Last year I wrote an article, for an architectural magazine, which
(still) expresses my thinking on computers in architectural practice.
I will enclose a copy of it as it may be of some interest.
Last, but not least, congratulations gentlemen, on MEGADISC. I
subscribe to a couple of USA Amiga magazine disks, and on its promise,
I think yours will be out in front!
Sincerely,
Keith Neighbour,
C/- Neighbour and Lapsys,
Adelaide.
*** Thanks, Keith, for the feedback and the welcome words of
encouragement. We're hoping to fulfil that promise and more.
=================
Dear Tim & Ian,
Re our phone conversation today, I am enclosing a cheque to cover
the cost of a six issue subscription of MEGADISC, and the following
items:
One packet of (10) Nashua 3.5" diskettes
A set of Demo discs on True Basic
Your catalogue disc for the Fish Disks
Once again may I congratulate you on a first class effort in your
production of the Premiere edition of MEGADISC. If you sustain such a
bright standard of informative and useful digital publishing in future
editions, Amiga owners will be doubly fortunate. Firstly, in owning
such a fantastic computer, and secondly in having access, through the
medium of MEGADISC, to the sort of information and resources which are
so necessary to Amiga owners, who want to exploit the vast potential
of this wonderful machine. Keep up the good work folks!!
Your faithfully,
Len Stanley,
Turramurra, NSW.
Yes, I liked your disk, up to a point. If it had been around a
few months ago, it would have been excellent!! So, I guess for the
people with brand new Amigas it would be good.
I do want to subscribe, because I believe in your venture and
want to encourage it. So don't just take my money and blow it - use it!
Before I launch into some (hopefully) constructive criticism, I
want to state again that I liked your disk, not as flashy as Amigazine
(at least copy of Oct.86). Some really useful tools and reviews (even
if I already had most from other sources), but the presentation is
promising and the style is good. The Artwork is CRUMMY!
O.K., so I'm no Sachs either, but there has to be more than that
locally - if you couldn't find it then why not use something from the
States. I would like to see the local effort praised - when it
deserves to be, but surely there's something like minimum standards!
The ArtGallery and Animation drawers on this disk would not be
missed if they were not there! Obviously the editors are skilled in
verbal communication, but either had no taste for the graphics
capabilities of the Amiga, despite the stylish "title page" of the
disk and easily found but bland "table of contents".
Hey! youse guys have had your Amigas for long enough to know that
the best way to find out how well it can do things is to experiment.
I don't want to praise you for producing a clone of Amigazine! I
think you show promise, all I ask is that you do exercise some class.
If necessary, probably appoint a graphics editor to not only choose
your artwork, but to generally help with layout style functions as
well. O.K. I hope you can fulfill your promise.
Yours,
in the Amiga,
John Olsen,
Rockhampton, QLD.
***Ahh! Thanks John. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and we have
readers who agree the ArtGallery could have been better, and others who
liked them... You can't please all the people all the time! We did get
an experienced graphic artist to choose the most interesting of what we
had. We'd love to showcase Australian Artistic talent - where is it??
In fact, we have received some from Graeme Whittle, and hope you like
the cycling Art this time around!
Dear Sirs,
Intro. disc was excellent!
Keep going with the down-to-nitty-gritty approach and the little bags
of interesting goodies. I hope you will do well with this venture,
because you deserve a good response from Amigans.
Best of Luck,
Jack Hutley,
Bendigo, VIC.
